Using origin gzip

#1

If the origin server returns a gzipped response and Fastly has automatic gzip compression turned on. Will Fastly use the origin server’s gzipped response? Or will it decompress it and then recompress it?

I’m trying to determine if I use zopfli to compress my files into smaller than normal gzip compressed files, will that compression be preserved or if Fastly will just recompress it losing any benefits I may have gained from zopfli.

Hello @adamzr if the origin is already providing a GZIP object, Fastly will not touch the object and will pass it along to the client. It will not decompress the object and recompress it.

To be more exact, if there’s any Content-Encoding header in the response from Origin, we will not try to gzip the object, even if you tell us to in VCL.
