Migrating from CloudFlare to Fastly

Hello, I’m a bit new to Fastly but very excited just have a number of questions.

Currently we have CloudFlare setup so I was told you can use/utilise both with CloudFlare doing the DNS as example.

So my question before we migrate is…

  1. CNAME will be set to Fastly as per instructions via CloudFlare but do we keep CloudFlare ON or do we turn it off/pause?
  2. Do we keep the dedicated SSL we have with CloudFlare active on CloudFlare?

I’m just a bit lost as to who points where and how so any help or advice to help me along the way would be appreciated.

Really glad to hear that you’re Migrating from CloudFlare to Fastly, welcome! There are a few things to think about before answering your questions. 1) Do you want to keep using CloudFlare moving forward? 2) Is it easier for you to have your services with different providers?

  1. CNAME will be set to Fastly as per instructions via CloudFlare but do we keep CloudFlare ON or do we turn it off/pause?
  • If you would like to keep using CloudFlare as your DNS you would need to keep CloudFlare on. However, it should be easy to change DNS providers when and if needed by following the DNS provider’s instructions on how to create or update a CNAME record. We also have instructions on how to update CNAME records in this doc.
  1. Do we keep the dedicated SSL we have with CloudFlare active on CloudFlare?
  • This depends on what is best for how you would like to manage your TLS (SSL). You can keep your dedicated SSL you have with CloudFlare if you’d like. However, it is usually easier to maintain as many services with one provider has possible. This allows for one point of contact in the event of questions, issues, or changes. Fastly provides our own TLS service options and you can review those option in this doc.
